‘Family Safety Night’ Introduces Kids and Those Who Serve and Protect

GAINESVILLE - Firefighters, police officers and sheriff's deputies responded to the Texas Roadhouse restaurant on Dawsonville Highway on Monday night, but there was no fire, no crime and no injuries.

It was all part of Family Safety Night. Representatives from local law enforcement gave children tours of fire engines, squad cars and ambulances.

County Fire Lt. Beverley Walker said it's all about building a positive relationship with kids.

“It helps good will, good relations and building a rapport,” she said.

Kim Martin was on hand with Safe Kids Gainesville-Hall County. “We’re actually checking car seats here tonight. Four out of five car seats are installed incorrectly,” she explained.

Safe Kids has a host of programs to help children with injuries. “Any way a child can get hurt, we’ve got a program for it,” Martin said.

Not only did children get to see fire trucks, police cars and medical units up close, they also had an opportunity to interact with those who serve and protect.

“A lot of times when we see kids, it’s not under the best of circumstances. We like to promote that relationship under good circumstances so that when they see us, they’re not afraid,” explained Walker.

Gainesville and Hall County police, fire and sheriff’s departments participated in the event.
