Safe Kids Georgia Launches Operation Pill Drop Statewide
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and Safe Kids Georgia, along with law enforcement agencies across Georgia, are sponsoring a statewide prescription medication take-back program called Operation Pill Drop to prevent accidental poisonings, abuse and misuse. On Saturday, September 25, 2010, we are holding a statewide Operation Pill Drop blitz, where agencies across the state will hold take-back medicine events.
Safe Kids Georgia in conjunction with our partners has developed a toolkit that outlines how to set up an Operation Pill Drop take-back event, along with the following resources to help local agencies publicize the event:
*Please note: Operation Pill Drop CANNOT collect needles/sharps, syringes with needles, thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, personal care products, empty containers, inhalers, medical equipment, and hydrogen peroxide.

The event was quite a success, raising over $50,000! Unintentional injury survivor, Brittni Falkenberg told her amazing story of surviving a farm equipment accident. She delighted the audience with her sense of humor and beauty on the inside and out.
Keynote speaker, Dara Torres is a five time Olympic Gold Medalist and mother. She made history as the first US swimmer to compete in four Olympic Games. She shared with the audience her journey of overcoming the odds and defying the sterotypes that come with age.
2010 Awards
Outstanding Volunteer
Each year we present an Outstanding Volunteer award that recognizes an exceptional individual who gives far beyond others to truly help our organization save the lives of children. Captain Renee McAneny voted as this year’s Outstanding Volunteer portrays the essence of what it means to give expecting nothing but the safety of our Georgia children.
Outstanding Coalition Coordinator
Coalition coordinators are essentially the core that makes Safe Kids Georgia a success. We like to recognize one coordinator each year that has shown his/her dedication to our organization day in and day out. This year, we would like to congratulate Janet Weisman on receiving the Outstanding Coalition Coordinator award. Janet’s passion to ensure children remain safe outshines any of the obstacles she may face and her enthusiasm for her work is infectious.
Outstanding Business
Safe Kids Georgia would be nowhere without the help from businesses within the community. This year, we would like to honor Jennifer Archer-Denton with FedEx Express with our Outstanding Business award. Since the beginning of Safe Kids/FedEx Walk this Way in 1999, Jennifer Archer-Denton has rallied her FedEx “Troops” to assist with the planning and implementation of the Annual Safe Kids DeKalb/FedEx Walk to School Day. The FedEx Express team is always eager to walk groups of children and parents to school and help make the event successful in any way possible.
