From preparing before your little one arrives through their first 6 months - learn more about how to keep them safe at every step.

Preparing For Your Baby

Set Up a Safe Sleep Surface

As you prepare to welcome your baby home, set up a safe sleep space just for them. Babies should have their own sleep surface in the same room as their caregiver with only a firm mattress and fitted sheet. A crib, bassinet, or pack and play are appropriate sleep surfaces as long as they are flat and firm. Keep the crib clear of blankets, pillows, or toys, and have pacifiers nearby if your baby needs comfort.

Installing the Right Car Seat

Be sure your baby’s car seat is installed properly by following both the seat’s instructions and your vehicle’s owner’s manual. For more information about finding and installing the right car seat, visit our child passenger safety page.

Save the Poison Control Number

Save the Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) number in your phone. Quick access can make all the difference in an emergency and gives you peace of mind knowing help is only a call away.

1 Month Old

Monitor your Baby’s Sleep Space

For the first 6 months, keep your baby’s sleep space in your room but on their own surface - like a crib or bassinet. Always place your baby on their back to sleep, in a clear crib with just a firm mattress and fitted sheet. And remember, sleepless nights are part of the journey - have a plan for how you can get support from a spouse, family, or friends to be able to get rest during those early months.

Plan Ahead for Bath Time

Always stay with your baby during bath time, keeping one hand on them for safety. Place a non-slip mat in the tub to prevent sliding and set your water heating no higher than 120°F to protect against burns. Ensure that you have everything you need with you such as towels and soap before starting the bath and never leave your baby in the bath.

4 - 6 Months Old

Begin Baby Proofing Your Home: At this age, your baby may be starting to roll over or crawl, so it is time to start baby proofing your home. Be sure to install sturdy gates at the top and bottom of stairs, anchor heavy furniture and TVs securely to the wall, and add childproof locks to kitchen cabinets to keep curious hands away from dangerous items.

Safely Store Household Medicines and Chemicals: Keep your child safe by storing all medications and household chemicals, like cleaners and laundry detergents, in locked cabinets or out of reach. Always use child-resistant caps for medicines and double-check that containers are securely closed after each use.

Be Aware of Your Child’s Sleep Changes: By 4-6 months, many babies start rolling - even in their sleep. If your baby is still swaddled at this stage, be sure their arms are free. Once they roll onto their tummy, you don’t need to turn them back - just always place them on their back to sleep.

Be Aware of Choking Hazards: At this stage, babies love to grab and explore, which makes choking hazards a big concern. Avoid toys with small or sharp parts, and check that toys with batteries are secure - loose pieces can easily end up in your baby’s mouth.

Prepared caregivers raise safe babies.
